Notably, in 1888, the Springfield [Missouri] Leader used the term in the context of combining newspapers in the state. The Philadelphia Press also humorously suggested a lack of intellectual output, similar to how "trusts" limited industrial productivity.
The comparison between the term "brain trust" and industrial trusts seems to have gained widespread attention in 1888, with even lawyers who entered into a fee-fixing agreement being called a "brain trust." Additionally, The Marion [Ohio] Star lamented the independence of small editors and referred to "machine-made" opinions of gullible editors as evidence of a "Brains Trust."
